2 Billion-Year-Old Rock Discovered in Aravalli Mountains Could Unlock Secrets of Early Life on Earth

Udaipur: Geologists from Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur have made a groundbreaking discovery in the Aravalli mountain range—a rock estimated to be around 2 billion years old. The research team believes this ancient rock holds vital chemical signatures that could shed light on the early processes that may have led to the emergence of life on Earth.

Significance of the Discovery
According to Professor Ritesh Purohit, Head of the Geology Department, the Aravalli rock is extremely rare and holds historical importance. The rock contains chemical markers that could help scientists understand how life evolved from abiotic chemical reactions during Earth’s early period. For over two decades, researchers have been studying this rock, analyzing its composition for clues about the origin of life and the Earth’s primordial environment.

“This rock provides a unique window into the early Earth,” said Prof. Purohit. “Chemical processes and life were closely intertwined in the initial phases of our planet. Studying these minerals may reveal how simple chemical reactions eventually led to the complex forms of life we see today.”

International Recognition
The findings have received international attention and have been published in the Bulletin of the Geological Society of America. Experts believe that this discovery could help answer fundamental questions about Earth’s early chemical environment and the evolution of life, providing a new perspective on one of science’s most enduring mysteries.

The Aravalli mountains, stretching across Rajasthan, are now not only a geological treasure but also a potential key to understanding the origins of life on our planet.
