17-Year-Old Minor Gives Birth in Kanpur; Family Reports Baby as Abandoned, Shocking Details Emerge

Kanpur, January 16, 2026: A shocking incident has emerged from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a 17-year-old girl gave birth to a baby. Fearing social stigma, her family initially reported the newborn as abandoned to the police.

The incident came to light in the Juhi police station area, when a local resident informed the authorities on the morning of January 9 that a newborn was lying unattended outside a house. The infant was immediately admitted to HALT Hospital. Police began an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and questioning nearby residents.

During the inquiry, the family revealed the truth, admitting that the minor girl had been sexually exploited by a tenant, identified as Suraj Singh from Siroti village in Unnao, who rented a room in their house. The family was unaware of the abuse until the girl became pregnant. Suraj Singh reportedly fled the premises before the pregnancy was discovered.

Due to fear of societal judgment, the family kept the matter private. When the girl gave birth, the newborn was placed outside the home, prompting the family to alert the police. Following the revelation, the girl’s father filed a formal complaint under the POCSO Act and provisions of sexual assault. Police have arrested the accused and initiated legal proceedings.

Authorities are continuing the investigation, ensuring the safety of the minor and highlighting the urgent need for vigilance against sexual exploitation of minors.
