16-Year-Old Gulshan Dies After Neck Severed by Kite String; Friends Injured Trying to Save Him

Indore: A tragic incident in Indore claimed the life of 16-year-old Gulshan when a kite string, coated with glass and made of hazardous nylon, severed his neck. Gulshan was returning home with friends from the Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary when the fatal accident occurred. In a desperate attempt to save him, his friends also suffered injuries to their fingers.

Fatal Incident on Bypass Road
According to Devendra Markam, in-charge of Tezaji Nagar Police Station, “Gulshan was riding his motorcycle on Bypass Road with friends when the kite string got entangled around his neck. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but succumbed to excessive bleeding.” Authorities have visited the site and are investigating all aspects of the incident.

Chinese ‘Manja’ Linked to Tragedy
The kite string involved, known as ‘Chinese manja,’ is made of nylon and coated with glass shards to enhance its cutting ability during kite-flying competitions. Despite being banned in India, it is still widely used. Witnesses reported that the string was so sharp and strong that when two of Gulshan’s friends tried to remove it from his neck, they sustained injuries to their fingers.

Nationwide Ban in 2024
Following recommendations from the Animal Welfare Board of India, nylon kite strings were banned nationwide in 2024 due to the severe threat they pose to animals, especially birds. Authorities have recommended using simple cotton threads for kite flying. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing safety risks associated with banned kite strings and the urgent need for awareness and strict enforcement.
