Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A dramatic turn of events unfolded at a luxury hotel in Gwalior when a gold necklace worth approximately ₹15 lakh, belonging to the son-in-law of former minister and sitting MLA Girraj Dandotiya, was reported stolen during a high-profile wedding ceremony—only to be recovered later from the same hotel room under unexpected circumstances.
The incident occurred at Tansen Residency, a property operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, located on Gandhi Road under the jurisdiction of Padav police station. The theft report caused panic among hotel staff and wedding guests, prompting immediate police intervention.
Room Booked for Wedding Guests
The wedding of former minister Girraj Dandotiya’s daughter was held in Gwalior, with several rooms booked at Tansen Residency for family members and guests. Room No. 211 was allotted to the groom, Shivam Paliya, son of construction businessman Anoop Sharma.
According to information, the groom had worn the gold necklace to the wedding venue on Thursday afternoon to seek blessings from Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who attended the ceremony. After the interaction, Shivam returned to his hotel room and later prepared to go back to the wedding function in the evening.
Necklace Left Behind, Room Left Unlocked
At around 8 pm, the groom left for the ceremony again but left the gold necklace inside the hotel room. In haste, he handed over the room key at the reception. Later, a family member pointed out that the room may not have been properly locked.
Alarmed, family members rushed back to the hotel around 9 pm, only to discover that the gold necklace was missing from Room 211. The news triggered chaos at the hotel, and the family confronted hotel management, who initially assured them that the jewellery would be recovered.
Police Called, Staff Questioned
When the necklace could not be traced by Friday afternoon, a formal complaint was lodged with Padav police. A police team reached the hotel and began intensive questioning of hotel staff and other employees, examining every possible angle of the alleged theft.
Unexpected Recovery
During the investigation, the case took a dramatic twist when police recovered the gold necklace from the same room. Officials stated that the necklace had accidentally slipped into the pocket of the groom’s coat kept inside the room, and was found during a thorough search.
Following the recovery, both the police and the complainant expressed relief. The necklace was formally handed over to Anoop Sharma, the groom’s father, after which the complaint was withdrawn.
Police Close the Case
With no evidence of theft, police closed the matter, terming the incident a case of misplacement rather than criminal intent. Hotel operations returned to normal after several hours of tension.
The episode briefly cast a shadow over what was otherwise a grand wedding event attended by political dignitaries and VVIP guests.
