Indian star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been struck by dengue and chikungunya, forcing him to miss several weeks of cricket. Chahal revealed the news on Thursday via his Instagram story, sharing an update about his health with fans.
Chahal, who was last seen playing for Haryana in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy group stage against Hyderabad, has been sidelined since 30 November. The illness also ruled him out of the SMAT final against Jharkhand in Pune, a match he was eager to participate in.
In his Instagram post, Chahal wished his team luck, writing, “I wanted to be part of my team for the SMAT final, but unfortunately, I am suffering from dengue and chikungunya, which has affected my health badly.” He did not specify when he will return to action, but hopes to make a comeback in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting 24 December.
Since the T20 World Cup last year, Chahal has not been selected for the Indian national team. His last appearance for the senior team was in August 2023.
Earlier this year, Chahal also played in England’s County Cricket and One-Day Cup for Northamptonshire, taking six wickets in six matches with an economy rate under six. In red-ball cricket, he performed impressively in Division Two County Championship, claiming 12 wickets in three matches, including a five-wicket haul.
This setback is a major blow for the leg-spinner, who has been a key figure in India’s limited-overs setup and continues to be a strong performer in domestic and overseas cricket.
