Yashasvi Jaiswal: The “Replacement” Player Who Keeps Proving His Worth

Jaipur, December 25: These days, few would envy the position of Yashasvi Jaiswal, one of India’s most talented young cricketers, who seems to be caught in the transition phase of Indian cricket. The 23-year-old opener from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh has displayed immense skill in white-ball cricket, yet opportunities continue to come mainly as a replacement player rather than a guaranteed spot.

A Career of “Replacement” Opportunities
In 2024, Jaiswal struggled to secure T20 opportunities overseas in the US and Caribbean, where veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were preferred. Though included in the Champions Trophy squad months later, he missed out due to the team’s requirement for a fourth spinner, as decided by then-head coach Gautam Gambhir. Similarly, when Shubman Gill, India’s all-format captain, was unavailable in T20s, selectors opted for Ishan Kishan over Jaiswal.

Even Jaiswal’s notable performances, like his 50-ball century against the same opposition in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, did not seem to weigh heavily in selection decisions. His opportunities in One Day Internationals have also primarily arisen when senior players were injured, such as his recent chance against South Africa, where he capitalized by scoring his first ODI century. Yet, with Shubman Gill set to return on January 11 for the New Zealand series, Jaiswal is expected to be sidelined once again.

Mental Fortitude and Experience
Turning 24 this Sunday, Jaiswal still has plenty of time ahead in his career. Experts, including former selection committee chairman Dilip Vengsarkar, emphasize the need for selectors to support him, assuring him of his value and providing constructive feedback. Vengsarkar said, “It is unfortunate to drop a player like Jaiswal repeatedly without any fault. He has been in outstanding form across formats. I wonder what more he needs to do to secure his place.”

T20 Challenges and Red-Ball Focus
Jaiswal last featured in T20Is during India’s Sri Lanka tour in July 2024, scoring 93, 12, 40, 30, and 10 in his last five innings, maintaining a strike rate of 200 as an opener. Following that stint, he was directed to focus on red-ball cricket, delaying his return to T20s. Despite this, his attacking style aligns perfectly with the current Indian team’s philosophy of aggressive, fearless cricket.

Vengsarkar’s Take: Jaiswal Deserves More
Recollecting his own experience of introducing Virat Kohli to the team at age 19, Vengsarkar stressed: “No match-winner should be repeatedly left out. Jaiswal has repeatedly proven he can deliver match-defining performances and give the team strong starts. If it were up to me, I would have chosen Jaiswal over Gill in certain scenarios.”

Despite the setbacks, Yashasvi Jaiswal remains a resilient young talent, continuously demonstrating his ability to shine whenever given the opportunity—a player whose perseverance and skill could soon make him an indispensable part of the Indian cricket setup.
