Yashasvi Jaiswal Reveals Why Young Players Feel Uneasy When Rohit Sharma Doesn’t Scold Them

New Delhi: Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma was known for his fiery pep talks on the field, often playfully scolding players to motivate them—a style that even became popular as memes. Recently, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal opened up about how young players feel when Rohit doesn’t chide them during matches.

Speaking at the Agenda Aaj Tak Summit, Jaiswal said, “Whenever Rohit Bhai scolds us, there’s a lot of care and affection hidden in it. Honestly, if he isn’t scolding, it feels strange—something must be wrong. Did I do something to upset him?”

Mentorship from Legends

Jaiswal, who shared significant partnerships with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during his maiden ODI century in Visakhapatnam, described how their presence changes the dressing room dynamics. “When they are around, it’s comforting because they share their experience and discuss the game. Seeing how they played and won for India is inspiring. They tell us the mistakes they made as youngsters and how we can avoid them.”

He further added, “When they aren’t there, we miss their guidance. Their presence makes the environment relaxed. During my third ODI, Rohit Bhai told me to stay composed, take my time, and he would take the risks—how many people do that? Similarly, Virat Paaji set small targets for me and said, ‘We have to win this match.’”

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on his career, Jaiswal said that his first ODI century felt as special as an Oval Test century. When asked about making it to the T20 World Cup squad, he said, “My dream is to play in the T20 World Cup, but I try to focus on my game and wait for my time.”
