Vadodara: Delhi Capitals faced a double setback on Tuesday night in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026. First, the team suffered a heart-breaking loss to Gujarat Joints by just 3 runs. Following the match at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium, Delhi captain Jemimah Rodrigues was fined ₹12 lakh for her team’s slow over rate, confirmed by the WPL management.
First Fine of the Season
The WPL management stated, “Delhi Capitals captain Jemimah Rodrigues has been penalized for her team’s slow over rate during the match against Gujarat Joints on Tuesday in Vadodara. This is the first fine this season under the WPL Code of Conduct for violating the minimum over rate regulations, with a penalty of ₹12 lakh imposed on Rodrigues.”
Impact on Standings
The defeat, coupled with the penalty, has impacted Delhi’s position on the points table. The Capitals have now slipped to fourth place with six points and a net run rate of -0.164. This makes the race for a playoff spot even more competitive. Delhi will face UP Warriors on 1 February in their final league match, a virtual knockout for the team’s playoff hopes.
Praise for Team Effort
Despite the close loss, Rodrigues lauded the fighting spirit of Sneh Rana and Nikki Prasad, who put together a crucial 70-run partnership for the seventh wicket while chasing the target. Rana contributed 29 runs off 15 balls, while Prasad added 47 runs off 24 balls, bringing Delhi close to victory.
As the WPL 2026 heads into its final league fixtures, Delhi Capitals will look to bounce back both on the scoreboard and in their over-rate performance.
