New Delhi: While Team India secured an unassailable 3-0 lead against New Zealand in the T20 series, one player’s campaign has turned into a nightmare. Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, who was handed a golden opportunity to prove himself ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, has struggled to make an impact. With the anticipated return of young sensation Tilak Varma, Sanju’s place in the playing XI appears increasingly uncertain.
Struggles Across Three Matches
Sanju Samson’s performance in the series has been disappointing. He managed just 10 runs in the first T20, 6 in the second, and failed to open his account in the third, departing for a duck. His poor form has raised concerns within the team management, as the World Cup demands consistent performers in key positions, especially in the middle order.
Tilak Varma’s Return to Shake Up the Batting Lineup
Tilak Varma, sidelined due to injury, is expected to be fully fit by the fifth T20 or the opening matches of the World Cup. His return will likely reshuffle India’s batting order. Ishan Kishan, who has performed exceptionally in Tilak’s absence, is expected to retain his place and could take on the opening role.
Ishan to Open, Tilak to Strengthen Middle Order
According to team strategy, Ishan Kishan is likely to open alongside another opener, while Tilak Varma slots in at number 3 or 4, leaving little room for Sanju Samson. The youngster’s consistent form and ability to seize opportunities have further diminished Sanju’s chances. This series was considered Sanju’s last chance to establish himself as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman ahead of the T20 World Cup, but his performance has disappointed selectors and critics alike.
The team management now faces a decision: whether to give Sanju one final opportunity in the remaining matches of the series or clear the way for Tilak Varma to take his place in the playing XI.
