“Why Are Rules Only for Bowlers?” Ashwin Defends Usman Tariq’s Strange Action, Takes Dig at ICC

Colombo: Pakistan registered a dominant 32-run victory over the United States in the 12th match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, but the match has sparked major controversy not because of the result, but due to the unusual bowling action of Pakistan debutant Usman Tariq.

Tariq, who delivered an impressive performance on his World Cup debut, became the centre of attention after his unique stop-and-go bowling action went viral on social media, triggering heated debate among fans and cricket experts.

Usman Tariq’s Action Creates Storm on Social Media

In his debut match, Usman Tariq troubled the American batters throughout his spell and emerged as Pakistan’s most successful bowler. He finished with figures of 3 wickets for 27 runs in 4 overs, playing a key role in restricting USA’s chase.

However, his bowling technique became the bigger talking point. Tariq was seen pausing for a moment before releasing the ball, watching the batter’s foot movement and then delivering the ball. This hesitation has made it difficult for batters to judge his timing, leading many to question whether his action should be allowed under cricket rules.

Soon after the match, several clips of Tariq’s delivery went viral, with fans calling it “unfair” and demanding ICC intervention.

Fan Questions Legality, Compares It to Football Rules

A fan on X (formerly Twitter) criticised Tariq’s action, stating that even football does not allow players to stop during a penalty run-up.

The user wrote:

“Even football doesn’t allow stopping during a penalty run-up. How can this be acceptable in cricket? The action is fine, but this pause during delivery stride should not be allowed.”

The post gained massive traction online, further fuelling the controversy.

R Ashwin Comes in Support, Questions ICC’s Bias

India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, known for his outspoken views on cricket rules, strongly defended Usman Tariq and responded sharply to the criticism.

Ashwin argued that cricket rules often favour batters, while bowlers face strict limitations.

He wrote:

“Agree that football doesn’t allow it! But when a batter is allowed to play a switch hit or reverse sweep without informing the bowler or umpire, why should restrictions apply only to bowlers? In fact, a bowler isn’t even allowed to change his bowling arm without informing the umpire. That rule should be changed first.”

Ashwin’s statement quickly went viral, with many fans supporting his viewpoint and agreeing that bowlers should be given equal freedom to innovate.

Pakistan Dominates USA, Moves to Top of Points Table

On the field, Pakistan outplayed USA in every department. Pakistan posted a strong total and then produced a disciplined bowling performance led by Usman Tariq and Shadab Khan, restricting USA and sealing a convincing win.

The victory marked Pakistan’s second consecutive win in the tournament, pushing them to the top of the group points table and strengthening their position for qualification.

Debate Likely to Continue

While Usman Tariq’s debut performance has been praised, the controversy around his unusual action is expected to continue, with many now demanding clarification from the ICC regarding the legality of such stop-start deliveries.
