New Delhi: Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, Team India has received a major boost with the return of all-rounder Washington Sundar and batsman Tilak Varma to full fitness.
Tilak Varma Set to Rejoin Squad
Tilak Varma, recovering from abdominal surgery, has resumed training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. He is expected to feature in a practice match on Friday. Varma was initially slated to join the team for the 4th and 5th T20Is against New Zealand, but Shreyas Iyer replaced him in the squad due to his recovery.
If fully fit, Varma is set to rejoin the Indian squad on February 3 in Mumbai. His return is expected to strengthen India’s middle order significantly for the World Cup.
Washington Sundar Nears Comeback
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar has also resumed batting in training and will begin bowling shortly. Sundar had been sidelined with a minor injury, which is now healing well. The team management hopes he will play a crucial role in the upcoming T20 World Cup matches.
Team India’s Strategy
India will play two practice matches in Mumbai following the five-match T20I series before the World Cup, which starts on February 7, with India facing the USA in their opening match. Sundar may or may not be available for India’s second match against Namibia, but he is expected to be key in the later matches, including the Pakistan clash on February 15 and the Netherlands game on February 18.
Sundar’s presence is vital as he is currently the team’s only off-spin option. Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are expected to handle the middle overs, while Sundar will play a crucial role in the powerplay. Tilak Varma’s comeback adds depth and stability to India’s batting line-up, ensuring the team enters the World Cup in stronger shape.
With both Sundar and Varma nearing full fitness, Team India looks well-prepared and confident heading into the T20 World Cup 2026.
