New Delhi: Ahead of India’s upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, Mohammed Siraj made a stunning impact in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, leaving a trail of wickets in his wake as Hyderabad crushed West Bengal. While Shami’s pace was hammered in the same match, Siraj’s fiery spell reminded everyone why he is one of India’s leading bowlers.
Hyderabad Post Massive Total
Hyderabad posted a daunting 352 for 5 in 50 overs, powered by opener Aman Rao, who completed his double century with a six off the last ball of the innings. West Bengal’s pacer Mohammed Shami struggled, conceding 70 runs in 10 overs despite picking up 3 wickets.
Siraj Turns the Tide
Siraj, who returned to domestic cricket after missing the South Africa ODI series due to workload management, tore through West Bengal’s top order. He dismissed Sumit Nag, captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Sudip Kumar Gharami within the first 5 overs, reducing the visitors to 38 for 3 and nearly claiming a hat-trick. Despite a resistance from Anustup Majumdar and Shahbaz, Siraj ended with 3 wickets for 39 runs in 7 overs, steering Hyderabad firmly toward victory. At the time of reporting, West Bengal were 148 for 5 in 28.4 overs, struggling to chase the huge target.
Shami Continues Wicket Hunt Despite Expensive Spell
Shami, returning after injury, continued to take wickets domestically. In this match, he claimed 3 scalps but conceded 70 runs in 10 overs. His tally for the season has now reached 14 wickets, placing him joint fourth in the tournament.
Siraj’s Consistent Form
This was Siraj’s second match of the season, following his 1-wicket haul against Chandigarh on 3 January, where he conceded only 19 runs in 8 overs. With selectors already including him in the India squad for the upcoming New Zealand ODIs, Siraj is being positioned as a key bowler for World Cup 2027 planning.
