New Delhi: In a spectacular display of batting, Vaibhav Suryawanshi smashed an unbeaten 171 off 95 balls as India thrashed the UAE Under-19 team by 234 runs in their opening match of the U19 Asia Cup on Friday. The 14-year-old left-hander hit 14 sixes and 9 fours, setting the record for the most sixes in an U19 ODI innings.
Indian Batting Masterclass:
Apart from Suryawanshi’s fiery innings, Vihaan Malhotra (69 off 55 balls) and Aaron George (69 off 73 balls) played crucial half-centuries as India posted a record 433/6 in 50 overs. This is India’s highest total in U19 ODIs and also the highest score in U19 Asia Cup history.
UAE struggled to chase the mammoth target. Despite half-centuries from Prithvi Madhu (50) and Uddish Suri (78 not out), the team managed 199/7, never posing a serious challenge to India.
Suryawanshi’s Record-Breaking Innings:
Suryawanshi’s 171 is the second-highest individual score by an Indian in U19 ODIs, just behind Ambati Rayudu’s 177* against England in 2002. Opening the innings, he raced to his half-century in 30 balls and completed his century in 56 balls. He shared a 212-run partnership for the second wicket with Aaron George before being dismissed off spinner Suri in the 33rd over.
After his dismissal, India’s middle order kept the momentum, with Vedant Trivedi (38 off 34), Abhigyan Kundu (32 not out off 17), and Kanishk Chauhan (28 not out off 12) steering the total past 400.
UAE’s Collapse:
Chasing a steep target, UAE lost six wickets for just 53 runs. Suri and Madhu added a crucial 85-run partnership for the seventh wicket, but India’s bowlers, backed by strategic fielding, ensured a comprehensive 234-run victory.
Conclusion:
Vaibhav Suryawanshi’s sensational knock not only set new records but also announced his arrival on the international youth cricket stage, giving India a strong start in the U19 Asia Cup.
