The Indian Under-19 cricket team secured a convincing victory in the second ODI against South Africa, taking an unassailable lead in the three-match series. Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi stole the show with a blistering 68 off just 24 balls, helping India register an eight-wicket win under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
Suryavanshi’s Explosive Innings
Chasing a revised target due to rain interruptions, Suryavanshi attacked from the outset, completing his fifty in only 19 deliveries. His innings included 10 towering sixes and a boundary, setting the tone for India’s commanding performance and putting South Africa out of contention. The young prodigy had earlier made headlines by scoring the fastest century for India U-19 against England in just 52 balls.
Weather Challenges and a Revised Target
The match faced multiple interruptions due to inclement weather and lightning. South Africa batted first and posted a total of 245 in 50 overs. However, due to weather disruptions, the DLS method revised India’s target to 176 runs in 27 overs. After Suryavanshi’s dismissal, Abhigyan Kundu (48) and Vedant Trivedi (31) anchored the innings, guiding India to a comfortable victory in just 23.2 overs.
Bowling Heroics and South African Resistance
South Africa’s Jason Rolls fought valiantly with a 114-ball century, scoring 114 runs to bring respectability to his team’s total. India’s spinner Kishan Singh was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets for 46 runs in 8.3 overs. R.S. Ambrish claimed two wickets, while Dipesh Devendran, Kanishk Chauhan, and Khilan Patel chipped in with one each.
Positive Signs Ahead of U-19 World Cup
This series victory serves as a perfect confidence booster for India ahead of the U-19 World Cup, starting January 15 in Zimbabwe and Namibia. Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s sensational form and India’s ability to perform under pressure are promising indicators for the team management as they look toward the upcoming mega event.
