USA Register First Win in T20 World Cup 2026, Thrash Netherlands by 93 Runs

Chennai: The United States finally opened its account in the T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding performance, defeating the Netherlands by a massive 93-run margin at the MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) on Friday. After suffering defeats against India and Pakistan earlier in the tournament, the USA bounced back strongly to register their first victory of the campaign.

Batting first, the USA posted an imposing total of 196/6 in 20 overs. In reply, the Netherlands collapsed under pressure and were bowled out for just 103 runs in the 16th over, failing to put up any significant resistance.

This win was also historic for the United States as it marked their first-ever T20 International victory over the Netherlands, having lost all three previous encounters between the two sides.

Mukkamalla’s Brilliant 79 Sets the Tone

Despite losing the toss, the USA got off to a steady start with captain Monank Patel and opener Shayan Jahangir providing early momentum. The pair added 27 runs in 2.5 overs before Jahangir departed after scoring a quick 20 off 14 balls.

Monank then stitched a crucial partnership with Saitaja Mukkamalla, adding 55 runs in 37 balls for the second wicket. Patel played a useful knock of 36 off 22 balls, including one six and three boundaries.

The highlight of the innings was Mukkamalla’s outstanding performance. The 21-year-old played a superb innings of 79 runs off 51 balls, smashing four sixes and five fours, anchoring the USA batting lineup.

Later, Mukkamalla combined with Shubham Ranjane to add another valuable 54-run partnership in 35 balls. Ranjane remained unbeaten on 48 off 24 deliveries, hitting two sixes and three fours, and ensured the USA finished strongly.

USA Spinners Dismantle Netherlands Batting

The Netherlands’ chase never gained momentum as the USA bowlers, particularly the spinners, dominated from the very beginning. Former India U-19 player Harmeet Singh produced a match-winning spell, claiming four wickets in his four overs, marking the best bowling performance for the USA in a T20 World Cup match.

Shadley van Schalkwyk was equally impressive, taking three wickets for 21 runs in 2.5 overs, while Mohammad Mohsin chipped in with two wickets for 19 runs. Left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige also contributed with one wicket.

The Netherlands’ batting lineup collapsed quickly, with no batter able to build a meaningful partnership. Bas de Leede was the top scorer with 23 runs, while skipper Scott Edwards managed 20.

With this emphatic victory, the USA have kept their World Cup hopes alive, while the Netherlands will need a strong comeback after a disappointing outing.
