The Ashes: Usman Khawaja Omitted, Cummins and Lyon Return for Third Test

Adelaide: Australia has announced its playing XI for the third Test of the Ashes series against England, scheduled to begin on December 17 at the Adelaide Oval. Notably, Usman Khawaja has been left out, while Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon make their return to the side.

Khawaja Omitted Despite Fitness

Khawaja, who turns 39 this week, has been a key figure in Australia’s batting lineup. He missed batting in the second innings of the first Test due to a back issue and was unavailable for the second Test. Despite being fully fit now, he has been excluded from the playing XI, raising concerns about his Test career prospects.

Cummins and Lyon Back

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins returns after missing the first two Tests due to injury. Nathan Lyon also rejoins the team; he was rested for the second Test, played with a pink ball, which favored fast bowlers, making him unnecessary at that time.

Other Changes: Neser and Doggett Dropped

Michael Neser, who took five wickets in the second innings of the Gabba Test, has been omitted. The 35-year-old has played just three Tests for Australia, waiting three years for a recall after his last five-wicket haul against West Indies in 2022. Brandon Doggett, who took five wickets in the first Test and two in the second, has also been left out.

Australia’s Playing XI for Third Test

  • Jake Weatherald
  • Travis Head
  • Marnus Labuschagne
  • Steve Smith
  • Cameron Green
  • Alex Carey (Wicketkeeper)
  • Josh Inglis
  • Pat Cummins (Captain)
  • Mitchell Starc
  • Nathan Lyon
  • Scott Boland

This lineup sees a balance of experience and pace, with Cummins leading the attack alongside Starc and Boland, while Lyon strengthens the spin department. Khawaja’s omission will be a talking point as Australia looks to assert dominance at Adelaide Oval.
