In a match destined to be remembered for decades, World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz battled through severe thigh and back injuries to defeat Alexander Zverev in a five-hour marathon at Rod Laver Arena on Friday. The 22-year-old Spaniard booked his spot in his first Australian Open final, edging closer to becoming one of the youngest Grand Slam champions in history.
Controversy Over Medical Time-Out
Alcaraz began the match in commanding fashion, taking the first two sets 6-4, 7-6(5). However, in the third set, he was visibly struggling with severe cramping in his right thigh and lower back, prompting a medical time-out. The stoppage triggered a heated exchange on court, with Zverev expressing frustration to chair umpire Mariana Veljovic, arguing that the rules did not allow a medical time-out for cramping. Alcaraz later admitted that while the medical break may not have been strictly justified, his physical condition left him no choice.
Zverev’s Fightback and Alcaraz’s Stunning Comeback
Following the break, Zverev capitalized on the psychological advantage, winning the next two tiebreak sets 7-6, 7-6 to push the match into a decisive fifth set. At one point, Zverev led 3-1 and looked poised to close out the match. Yet Alcaraz mounted a remarkable comeback, playing through pain with his thigh heavily strapped. Amid deafening crowd support, he leveled the score at 5-5 and ultimately clinched the final set 7-5, exploiting Zverev’s mental fatigue to secure a historic victory.
On the Verge of Grand Slam Glory
With this win, Alcaraz stands on the brink of completing a career Grand Slam — winning all four major titles — at an exceptionally young age. If he triumphs in Sunday’s final, he will become the youngest player in history to achieve the feat in the Open Era and join an elite list of just eight men to hold all four Grand Slam titles.
Upcoming Final
Alcaraz will face the winner of the second semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. Should he recover fully from his injuries, the final at Melbourne Park promises to be a historic showdown and potentially a defining moment in tennis history.
