Team India Boost: Shubman Gill Prepares for Comeback, Shines in Mohali Nets

New Delhi / Mohali: Star Indian batsman Shubman Gill has been spotted in intense net practice sessions at his home ground in Mohali, ahead of India’s upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. A video circulating on social media shows Gill back in his rhythm, playing aggressive shots around the wickets — a reassuring sign for fans as India begins a critical white-ball season.

Dropped from T20I Squad and Deputy Captaincy

Gill recently faced challenging times, having been excluded from the T20I squad due to inconsistent performances. In addition, he lost the deputy captaincy role, replaced by in-form wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, while all-rounder Axar Patel was appointed as deputy for the team led by Suryakumar Yadav. The selectors’ decision has been seen as a tough call, sending a clear message about performance expectations.

Recovery and Domestic Cricket Comeback

A leg injury during the T20I series against South Africa added to Gill’s difficulties. However, he has now fully recovered and has been included in Punjab’s squad for the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Although he hasn’t yet played a match in this List-A tournament, his impressive net sessions indicate that he is fully fit. With no Test matches scheduled for the next seven months, Gill’s focus is now entirely on limited-overs cricket.

White-Ball Captaincy Challenge

Shubman Gill faces a busy and crucial period in white-ball cricket, including the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, IPL 2026, and the tour of England. Starting 11 January in Vadodara, Gill will captain the ODI side on home soil for the first time, offering him a platform to assert both his batting form and leadership skills. This series will be particularly significant as his previous captaincy stint in Australia resulted in a 1-2 series loss, making this a key opportunity for redemption.
