New Delhi: Following consecutive clean sweeps at home in Test cricket under head coach Gautam Gambhir, Team India is now determined to reverse its fortunes. Captain Shubman Gill has reportedly presented a detailed plan to the BCCI to strengthen the team’s performance ahead of future home Test series.
Struggles in Recent Home Tests
The Indian Test team faced a crushing defeat in their recent home series against South Africa. In November, South Africa secured a 2-0 clean sweep. In the first Test, India failed to chase a modest target of 124 runs in the final innings—the lowest successful run chase lost by the team at home. The second Test ended in a humiliating 408-run defeat, marking India’s largest loss by runs in home Test cricket history.
Shubman Gill’s Proposal to BCCI
According to a report by The Times of India, Shubman Gill suggested that the team should hold a 15-day preparatory camp before every Test series. A BCCI source explained, “Gill clearly stated that the team needs better preparation before stepping onto the field for a Test series. This season, scheduling issues left the players with little time to prepare. He recommended a 15-day red-ball camp before each series as an ideal solution.”
In addition, the BCCI is reportedly ready to give Gill more authority in shaping team plans. The source added, “Gill is now showing assertive leadership and presenting his vision clearly to the selectors and the board. This is a positive sign for Indian cricket, as a strong captain is needed after Rohit Sharma. Both the Test and ODI teams fall under his leadership, and it is important that his inputs are given due weight.”
Challenges Ahead
Implementing a 15-day pre-series camp will not be easy. Many of India’s Test players are actively involved in ongoing ODI and T20 internationals, making it difficult for them to participate in extended camps. For instance, immediately after the Asia Cup, the team had to start the Test series against West Indies, and players returning from Australia had to gear up for the South Africa Tests with minimal preparation time.
With Shubman Gill taking charge and proposing structured preparation, India hopes to build a more resilient and competitive Test side at home.
