T20 World Cup 2026: Evin Lewis Dropped from West Indies Squad, Hints at Retirement

New Delhi: Explosive West Indies opener Evin Lewis has been left out of the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. The tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is set to begin on 7 February. Alongside Lewis, fast bowler Alzarri Joseph also missed out, though Joseph was ruled out due to injury, while Lewis was dropped from the team based on selection.

Retirement Hint on Instagram

Lewis appeared visibly disappointed after being excluded and hinted at retiring from international cricket via his Instagram story. He wrote:
“I want to thank everyone who has supported me through my 10 years in international cricket, but I feel the time has come for me to move on… stay tuned.”

Even after scoring a valiant 91 in his last match against Ireland in June, Lewis was dropped from the squad. He had recently returned to the team for the series against Afghanistan but scored just 17 runs in two innings, which was considered insufficient for continued selection. Earlier, in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, he managed only 27 runs in his last five innings, with a highest score of 17.

Career Highlights

The 31-year-old has represented West Indies in 67 T20 internationals, scoring 1,799 runs at an average of 29 and a strike rate of 152. He has recorded 13 fifties and two centuries, both scored against India. In addition, Lewis has played 70 One Day Internationals, amassing 2,279 runs at an average of 37 and a strike rate of 86, including five centuries and 12 fifties.

Lewis’s potential retirement marks the end of an era for the West Indies’ explosive top-order batting lineup, as the team looks forward to the T20 World Cup 2026 without one of its most experienced openers.
