T20 World Champion Magnus Carlsen Loses Temper After Arjun Erigaisi Upset at FIDE World Blitz

Doha: World No.1 chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen was once again seen losing his temper following a defeat—this time at the hands of India’s rising star Arjun Erigaisi. The incident occurred during the FIDE World Blitz Championship in Doha, and the moment, captured on video, has quickly gone viral.

Carlsen’s Frustration on Display

Carlsen, who holds the World Blitz and World Rapid titles, has previously displayed frustration in high-stakes matches. Earlier this year, he reacted similarly after losing to India’s D. Gukesh at the Norway Chess tournament. In Doha, his recent loss to Erigaisi saw him slam his hand on the table in anger, reflecting his high expectations and competitive intensity.

Erigaisi Outplays the Champion

Arjun Erigaisi has been in remarkable form throughout the championship. On Monday, he demonstrated superior technique, sharp endgame calculations, and composure under pressure to outplay Carlsen. In the same round, Erigaisi also defeated renowned grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov, bringing him joint-top with nine points after 11 rounds alongside France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Championship Standings Tight

With only two rounds remaining in the 13-round tournament, the leaderboard is closely contested. Carlsen is tied at 8 points with seven other players, including title contenders Alireza Firouzja and India’s Sunildat Narayanan. India’s R. Praggnanandhaa and current Classical World Champion D. Gukesh are tied at 7.5 points, placing them 14th.

Erigaisi Eyes the Title

The 22-year-old Erigaisi, who recently won a bronze medal in Rapid chess, has been a revelation in this Blitz championship, recording 8 wins, 2 draws, and just 1 loss. His stunning performance against the world champion highlights India’s growing dominance in global chess and positions him as a strong contender for the title in the final rounds.
