Super Kings Captain Faf du Plessis Out of SA20, Pakistan League Plans in Doubt

Johannesburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis will miss the remaining matches of the 2025–26 SA20 season due to a thumb injury that requires surgery. The injury occurred on January 10 during the match against MI Cape Town, when he was fielding and was unable to bat. Donovan Ferreira is expected to take over captaincy duties in his absence.

Franchise Confirms Injury
The franchise confirmed that du Plessis has torn the ligament in his right thumb and will need surgical intervention. JSK posted on social media: “All our love is with you, Captain. Faf du Plessis will miss the remainder of the SA20 season due to a right thumb ligament injury requiring surgery. Our best wishes are with you.”

Team Performance and Faf’s Form
Johannesburg Super Kings have performed well this season, accumulating 17 points from 7 matches and currently standing third on the points table. The team remains in contention for the playoffs. However, du Plessis’ personal form has been modest, scoring only 135 runs in 5 innings, with the team winning the first three matches but managing only two wins in the next four games.

Pakistan Super League Plans Uncertain
At 41, du Plessis had opted out of the IPL auction this season and planned to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). With the SA20 injury requiring surgery and recovery, it remains uncertain how soon he will be fit to participate in the PSL, which is scheduled to begin in over two months.
