New Delhi: Indian cricket fans witnessed a surprising shake-up in the T20 team as Shubman Gill was dropped after a string of underwhelming performances. Gill, who had been opening in place of Sanju Samson and even served as the vice-captain, failed to deliver consistently. Meanwhile, Samson’s own form in 2025 has not been significantly better, showing that the gap between the two stars remains minimal.
Shubman Gill’s 2025 T20 Stats:
Shubman Gill played 15 T20 Internationals for India in 2025, batting in all matches and scoring 291 runs at an average of 24.25 with a strike rate of 137. Despite opening in every match, Gill could not register a single fifty. His innings included 38 fours and 4 sixes, with his highest score being 47 against Pakistan in Dubai.
Sanju Samson’s 2025 T20 Stats:
Sanju Samson, on the other hand, also played 15 T20 Internationals in 2025 but batted in only 11 innings. He scored 222 runs at an average of 20.18 and a strike rate of 126.85. Samson’s highlight came in the Asia Cup, where he scored a fifty against Oman. Earlier in the year, he struggled in the T20 series against England, scoring just 1, 3, 5, 16, and 26 in five matches.
Form in 2024 vs 2025:
While Samson shone in 2024, scoring 436 runs in 12 T20 innings at an impressive average of 44 and strike rate of 180, including three centuries and a fifty, 2025 has been less kind to him. He was the leading run-scorer for India in T20s that year, but he did not get an opportunity to play in the T20 World Cup.
Conclusion:
Both Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson have struggled to replicate their best performances in 2025. With form being patchy, the competition for India’s T20 spots remains fierce, making their place in the team highly performance-dependent.
