New Delhi: Following Shubman Gill being handed the captaincy in both Test and ODI formats, the BCCI is reportedly planning to revise his contract category—potentially affecting the earnings of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as captain in Test cricket after Rohit’s sudden retirement mid-IPL 2025 and also assumed ODI leadership ahead of the Australia tour. Now, according to reports, the young star could surpass Rohit and Kohli financially as the BCCI prepares to upgrade his contract grade.
Contract Revision on the Agenda
The BCCI Apex Council’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for 22nd December, where the revision of player contracts, including women cricketers, is on the agenda. The report claims that Rohit and Kohli could see their annual salaries reduced, while Gill may be promoted to a higher category.
Current Status: A+ Category
Currently, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli hold A+ category contracts, which provide ₹7 crore annually each. Even after winning the T20 World Cup, both were retained in this top bracket for the 2024-25 period along with Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, despite retiring from certain formats. Post-Test retirement, they now only play ODIs.
Possible Downgrade for Rohit and Kohli
Reports suggest that since both seniors now play in only one format, their contracts could be downgraded from A+ to A category, reducing their annual salary by ₹2 crore each. Under the BCCI pay scale, A+ earns ₹7 crore, A earns ₹5 crore, B earns ₹3 crore, and C earns ₹1 crore per year.
Gill Set for Promotion
Shubman Gill, currently in the A category, could be promoted to A+, joining Ravindra Jadeja—who remains as Test vice-captain—and Jasprit Bumrah in the top tier. This promotion reflects both his on-field responsibilities and leadership role.
Other Decisions in AGM
The upcoming AGM will also discuss match fees for domestic women cricketers, remuneration for umpires and match referees, and updates to the BCCI’s digital platforms. This will be the first AGM under the tenure of BCCI President Mithun Manhas, keeping all eyes on potential decisions affecting players across formats.
