New Delhi: Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill, who leads the national team in ODIs and Tests, has broken his silence for the first time after being dropped from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad. Speaking ahead of India’s first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday, Gill expressed his respect for the selectors’ decision and extended his best wishes to the team.
Dropped from the T20 Squad
Gill’s recent performances in the T20 format had been below expectations, prompting the team management to exclude him from the squad. All-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed as the deputy to T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav in his place.
Addressing the media, Gill said, “I respect the selectors’ decision and wish the team all the best for the T20 World Cup. I am exactly where I am supposed to be, and no one can take away what is written in my destiny. A player always strives to give his best for the country, and the selectors have made their choice.”
Focus on Upcoming ODIs
Meanwhile, veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are in top form and expected to lead India’s charge in the three-match ODI series against a fresh New Zealand squad. Their performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy’s league stage demonstrated that they remain a potent force in the Indian lineup.
The cricketing world now awaits Gill’s response following his T20 World Cup omission. Last year, he missed most of the South Africa series due to injury concerns, and his recent dip in form has added to the speculation. Gill’s return could potentially push young Yashasvi Jaiswal down the top order, despite the latter’s maiden ODI century against South Africa in the previous match.
