Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer’s much-anticipated return to competitive cricket has hit a setback. Iyer, who was preparing to play for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and subsequently feature in India’s ODI series against New Zealand, will now have to wait longer for clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
Return to Play Delayed
Initially, plans were in place for Iyer to resume cricketing action from December 30. However, according to the Times of India, he will need at least another week in the “Return to Play” (RTP) program before getting approval to play.
Injury and Physical Setback
Iyer suffered a stomach injury during the ODI series against Australia, which required surgery. While he can bat without issue, the injury caused a significant loss of weight—approximately six kilograms—which has impacted his overall strength. Although Iyer has regained some weight, his muscle strength has not yet returned to full levels.
A BCCI official explained, “There is no problem with his batting, but the six-kilogram weight loss following the Australia injury has affected his overall strength. The medical team does not want to take any risks as Iyer is a vital player for the ODI setup. Complete recovery is the priority before selectors and management consider him for the New Zealand series.”
Shreyas Iyer remains a key figure for India, and the delay underscores the importance of ensuring he returns fully fit and ready to contribute at the highest level.
