New Delhi: The IPL 2026 mini-auction is set to take place on 16 December at Abu Dhabi, featuring several key players and team management figures. Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer, having recovered from a recent injury, is expected to lead his team’s bidding efforts at the auction.
Iyer Ready to Lead
According to BCCI sources, Shreyas Iyer will be present at the auction despite recovering from a splenic injury sustained during India’s recent ODI series against Australia. Iyer’s leadership last season guided Punjab Kings to the final, making his presence at the auction highly significant for his franchise. Under IPL rules, each team can have up to eight members inside the auction hall, with six additional members allowed outside.
Ponting’s Absence
On the downside, PBKS may face a setback as head coach Ricky Ponting is unlikely to attend the auction. Ponting is currently in Australia, covering the Ashes series, with the third Test starting on 17 December in Adelaide. Additionally, Punjab Kings have only ₹11.5 crore left to spend at the auction, limiting them to four player acquisitions, including a maximum of two overseas players.
Other Notable Attendees
In contrast, Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori has secured permission from Cricket Australia to attend the auction in Abu Dhabi, despite being mid-series for the Ashes. Other notable attendees include Justin Langer, head coach of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Tom Moody, Global Director of Cricket, who will also participate in the mini-auction.
As the IPL 2026 mini-auction approaches, teams and fans alike are keenly watching how top players and strategic management figures will shape the next season.
