New Delhi: Indian cricket team vice-captain and star batsman Shreyas Iyer will be sidelined for several months due to a serious injury, dealing a blow to both the national team and his IPL franchise.
Iyer sustained the injury while fielding during the ODI series against Australia in Sydney last month. He is now undergoing rehabilitation in Mumbai, but medical reports indicate that a full recovery will take at least three months.
As a result, Iyer will miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa starting 30 November, as well as the January 2026 series against New Zealand. His participation in the T20 World Cup (Feb–Mar 2026) is also in serious doubt, and he may miss the initial matches of IPL 2026.
Doctors have advised Iyer to avoid any activity that puts pressure on his abdomen. He recently underwent an ultrasonography (USG) scan, which shows improvement, but further monitoring is planned. Another scan in the coming months will determine when he can resume full training at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Shreyas Iyer has been a key figure in India’s ODI line-up, scoring over 500 runs at No. 4 in the 2023 ODI World Cup and emerging as the highest run-scorer for India in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. In the IPL, Iyer represents Punjab Kings (PBKS), who bought him for ₹26.75 crore in the 2025 mega auction, making him team captain. In his debut season as captain, he scored over 600 runs, guiding PBKS to the IPL final.
This injury comes as a major setback for fans eagerly anticipating Iyer’s performances for both India and PBKS in the upcoming cricketing season.
