Shreyas Iyer Just 34 Runs Away from History, Set to Surpass Legends like Sachin, Kohli, and Rohit

India and New Zealand will face off in the second ODI of their three-match series on Wednesday, and Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is on the verge of a remarkable milestone. Iyer needs just 34 runs to reach 3,000 ODI runs. Achieving this feat in the second match would make him the fastest Indian to reach 3,000 runs, surpassing legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

Current Indian Record Held by Shikhar Dhawan
The record for reaching 3,000 ODI runs in the fewest innings by an Indian currently belongs to Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved it in 72 innings. Virat Kohli reached the mark in 75 innings. Iyer has so far scored 2,966 runs in 68 innings. If he scores the required 34 runs in Wednesday’s match, he will reach 3,000 runs in just 69 innings, breaking Dhawan’s record. Globally, he would also become joint-fourth fastest alongside West Indies legend Viv Richards, who also reached the milestone in 69 innings.

Iyer’s Journey Since 2017
Shreyas Iyer made his ODI debut for India in 2017. Despite occasional gaps in selection, his talent has never been in doubt. Recently, after recovering from injury, he returned to competitive cricket via the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, scoring 82 and 45 in two matches. In the first ODI against New Zealand, he contributed a quick 49 off 47 balls while chasing 301, showing he is in excellent form. If momentum continues, scoring the required 34 runs in the second ODI seems well within reach.
