Jaipur: Indian star batsman and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer made a strong return to competitive cricket in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, representing Mumbai and leading the team as captain. Iyer had missed India’s recent ODI series against South Africa due to a thigh injury sustained during the Australia tour. India will next play against New Zealand starting 11 January.
Helmet Blow on First Ball, Six on the Next
Mumbai’s captain was in action against Punjab when he faced a fiery start. On his very first delivery, Gurnoor Brar bowled a sharply angled ball that struck Iyer’s helmet. The physiotherapist had to check on him, causing a brief pause in play.
However, Iyer quickly regained composure. Brar bowled another short-pitched delivery immediately after. This time, Iyer was fully prepared, pulling the ball over square leg for a six, sending the crowd into excitement. Punjab Kings later shared the incident on social media with the caption:
“Official ‘Didn’t see that one? You won’t see the next’ moment.”
Mumbai Narrowly Loses
Despite Iyer’s 45-run contribution and Sarfaraz Khan’s explosive 62 off 20 balls, Mumbai fell just short, losing to Punjab by one run. Punjab posted 216 runs in their 46 overs, led by Ramandeep Singh (72) and Anmolpreet Singh (57). Mushir Khan claimed three key wickets.
Chasing 217, Mumbai fought valiantly but were bowled out for 215 in 27 overs. The last three wickets fell with just three runs on the board, denying Mumbai a thrilling victory.
Iyer’s return, marked by both courage and power-hitting, signals his readiness for India’s upcoming T20 World Cup clash against New Zealand.
