Shoaib Akhtar Retracts Remarks on Mohsin Naqvi, Calls Him “Brother” After Controversy

New Delhi, Feb 17: Pakistan’s former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar sparked a stir after India defeated Pakistan in Colombo, initially targeting PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi with sharp criticism on live TV. However, Akhtar has now backtracked, softening his stance and calling Naqvi “brother” in a surprising turn of events.

Akhtar’s Original Remarks

During a panel discussion on ABP News, which included India’s former cricketer Mohammad Kaif, Akhtar criticized someone without naming them explicitly. He used strong words, describing the person as “incompetent” and “ignorant”, which many interpreted as being directed at Mohsin Naqvi.

The U-Turn

Soon after, Akhtar clarified his statement on a Pakistani news channel, saying that his original comments were not aimed at Mohsin Naqvi personally but were about top-level international cricket standards. Despite the clarification, the timing and tone of his initial remarks had clearly suggested Naqvi.

Now, Akhtar has publicly softened his language, calling Naqvi “brother” and distancing himself from the earlier criticism.

Pakistan’s Super 8 Scenario

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s own chances in T20 World Cup 2026 remain precarious. In Group A, India have already qualified for the Super 8 by winning all three of their matches. The second qualifying spot is contested between Pakistan and the USA, both sitting on 4 points each, with the USA ahead on net run rate.

Pakistan has one match remaining against Namibia. A victory over Namibia would ensure Pakistan’s direct qualification to the next round. Conversely, if Namibia pull off an upset, Pakistan will be eliminated from the tournament.
