Security Breach at Rajkot ODI: Fan Rushes onto Field, Hugs Virat Kohli

A major security lapse was witnessed during the second ODI between India and New Zealand in Rajkot when a fan broke through security and ran onto the field to hug Virat Kohli.

Fan Reaches Kohli on the Field

The incident occurred while Kohli was fielding. Videos from the match show the fan sprinting towards Kohli, embracing him briefly. Security personnel quickly intervened and removed the intruder from the ground. Kohli, displaying his usual composure, reciprocated the hug before the fan was taken away.

Not the First Incident

This is not the first time Kohli has faced such security breaches. In November, during the first ODI against New Zealand in Ranchi, a fan ran onto the field after Kohli scored his 52nd ODI century, falling at his feet. The intruder was removed by security officials, similar to the Rajkot incident.

The Rajkot fan’s fate and any legal action against him are yet to be disclosed.

IPL Security Concerns Previously Highlighted

Rajkot’s incident comes amid recurring concerns about cricket security in India. During the 2025 IPL, fans breached the field to approach Kohli and Riyan Parag of Rajasthan Royals, attempting similar hugs. Such incidents have sparked discussions about tightening stadium security.

Match Performance Overshadowed

On the field, Kohli’s performance was underwhelming. India lost the match by seven wickets, allowing New Zealand to level the series. Kohli had recently reclaimed the No. 1 spot in ICC ODI batting rankings, surpassing Rohit Sharma. After scoring 93 runs in the first ODI at Vadodara, expectations were high, but in Rajkot, he managed just 23 runs before being dismissed.

Rajkot’s security breach highlights the ongoing need for vigilance, especially with high-profile players like Kohli in action.
