Scotland Could Replace Bangladesh in T20 World Cup Amid Political Tensions; ICC Decision Awaits

New Delhi: Uncertainty looms over the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) refused to play matches in India due to ongoing political tensions. Reports suggest that Scotland is being considered as a potential replacement, although ICC has not yet made any official contact.

Bangladesh Refuses to Play in India
The BCB has informed the ICC that, due to security and political concerns, they will not tour India for the World Cup. BCB Director Amjad Hussain stated that during a recent meeting with ICC representatives, the board requested that their matches be relocated to an alternative venue. Bangladesh emphasized that they are not seeking to withdraw from the tournament entirely, but are asking for a venue change. The ICC has said it is considering the request but has not set a deadline for a decision.

Scotland’s Claim as Replacement
Currently ranked 14th in T20 cricket, Scotland is the highest-ranked team not to have qualified for the World Cup. Historically, Scotland replaced Zimbabwe in the 2009 T20 World Cup when the latter withdrew. However, according to BBC reports, ICC has not contacted Cricket Scotland yet, and Scottish officials have no plans to reach out proactively, respecting Bangladesh’s position. Scotland’s team is currently preparing for their regular Tri-Series but is reportedly ready to step in on short notice if required.

ICC Faces a Complex Decision
The ICC now faces a challenge in determining a replacement if Bangladesh withdraws. Unlike 2009, the current regional qualification system has made the process more complicated. Scotland missed qualifying for the main tournament last year after finishing behind Italy and the Netherlands in the Europe Qualifiers, raising questions about whether replacement selection will be based on rankings or qualification results. As of now, ICC has not clarified the criteria.

Cricket fans worldwide are closely watching the situation as the T20 World Cup approaches, with the possibility of Scotland stepping in adding an element of uncertainty to the tournament’s lineup.
