As India prepares to face Namibia in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 group stage at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, uncertainty surrounds the playing XI. Explosive batsman Abhishek Sharma, who was recently hospitalized due to a stomach infection, remains a doubtful starter. In case Sharma is rested, the question of who should replace him has sparked debate, with former Indian captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth offering his strong opinion.
Srikkanth’s Bold Take on Samson and Sundar
Speaking on Cheeky Chika, Srikkanth stated:
“If I were captain, I would think differently. Sanju Samson is completely out of form. I would bring in Washington Sundar and even open with him. This is to get him match-ready for the big clash against Pakistan. If Abhishek returns for the Pakistan game, I would slot Sundar at number eight and rest Rinku Singh. My thinking is out-of-the-box. Sanju has had enough opportunities but hasn’t delivered. This move is mainly to give Sundar some time on the field.”
It is worth noting that Washington Sundar is returning from injury and has recently joined the team in Delhi.
The Importance of Abhishek Sharma
Srikkanth further emphasized the significance of Abhishek Sharma’s participation:
“Getting Abhishek to play against Namibia and regain his form is crucial. Momentum is key in cricket, and missing him would be a big loss. On the positive side, Sanju will get another chance. The real question is whether he can make the most of it. He has no alternative; he must capitalize on this opportunity.”
With the high-stakes India vs Pakistan match on 15 February looming, the team management faces a delicate balancing act between resting players, maintaining form, and fielding a competitive XI. Srikkanth’s recommendation to experiment with Sundar highlights the strategic considerations ahead of India’s marquee clash.
