With the T20I series already sealed, the Indian cricket team is expected to experiment with its playing XI in the fourth match against New Zealand at the ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. While India holds an unassailable 3–0 lead in the five-match series, a few selection calls—particularly in the batting and bowling departments—are set to dominate discussions ahead of the game.
India’s dominant run in the first three matches has been built on explosive batting displays and disciplined bowling performances. However, the lack of runs from opener Sanju Samson has emerged as a concern.
Samson Under Pressure, But Likely to Get Another Chance
Sanju Samson has struggled to find rhythm in the series, managing just 16 runs in three innings. His form has sparked debate, especially with Ishan Kishan in red-hot form. Kishan has scored 112 runs at a staggering strike rate of 224 across three matches, strengthening his case as a first-choice option.
Despite the numbers, indications from the Indian camp suggest that Samson is likely to retain his spot as opener in Visakhapatnam. During net sessions, Samson spent extended time batting and was seen in detailed discussions with the coaching staff, hinting at continued backing from the team management.
Shreyas Iyer Set for Comeback?
India’s willingness to rotate players in the first three games could open the door for Shreyas Iyer, who has impressed during net practice—particularly against spin bowling. His aggressive approach and strong intent have caught the attention of the selectors and coaching staff.
Another positive sign for India has been the return to fitness of Axar Patel, who looked sharp with both bat and ball in training. While his inclusion appears likely, the team management faces a decision regarding the vice-captaincy, should Axar return to the XI.
Kuldeep’s Place Under Scanner
Spinner Kuldeep Yadav may find himself on the bench after an inconsistent run against New Zealand. Apart from a decent outing in the second T20I, Kuldeep struggled in Guwahati, conceding 32 runs in three overs without a wicket. He has taken just two wickets in two matches, with an economy rate exceeding nine.
In contrast, Ravi Bishnoi impressed in the third T20I with a controlled spell and two wickets, making a strong case to retain his place. Varun Chakravarthy, who was rested earlier, is also expected to return, further intensifying competition among the spinners.
Possible Rest for Key Players
Fast bowler Harshit Rana could be rested, with Arshdeep Singh likely to come back into the side. There is also speculation that Hardik Pandya may be given a break as India looks to manage workloads ahead of bigger assignments.
Probable India Playing XI
Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Rinku Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh
With experimentation on the cards and several players fighting for World Cup relevance, the fourth T20I promises to be a crucial audition rather than just another dead rubber, as India eyes a 4–0 lead in the series.
