Sachin Tendulkar vs Virat Kohli: Records Kohli Has Broken—and the Milestones He May Never Reach

New Delhi: With a magnificent century in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, Virat Kohli has once again reignited the debate that has dominated Indian cricket for over a decade—Kohli vs Sachin. Even legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has now declared Kohli the GOAT of ODI cricket, acknowledging the Delhi star’s unmatched dominance in the format.

During his breathtaking knock of 135 runs, Kohli shattered multiple records, many of which once seemed unbreakable when held by the cricketing “God” Sachin Tendulkar. Yet, there remain some milestones that—even with his extraordinary consistency—Kohli may never be able to touch.

Where Kohli Has Surpassed Sachin

● King of Centuries in ODIs

Sachin’s once-insurmountable 49 ODI centuries were long regarded as a towering landmark. Kohli, however, has turned that mountain into a molehill, racing ahead to 52 ODI hundreds and widening the gap with every passing series.

● Most Centuries in a Single Format

With his latest hundred in Ranchi, Kohli now holds the record for the most centuries in a single international format. His 52 ODI tons surpass Sachin’s 51 Test hundreds, a benchmark that stood unmatched for decades.

● Master of the Chase

In successful run-chases, Kohli’s numbers are beyond extraordinary.
He holds records for:

  • Most ODI centuries while chasing
  • Most runs in successful chases
  • Most 50+ scores during chases

Kohli has also overtaken Sachin in terms of 50+ scores on home soil, showcasing his reliability in all conditions.

● Faster Milestones Than Sachin

According to Hindustan Times, Kohli has reached every run milestone from 8,000 to 14,000 ODI runs significantly faster than Sachin.

He also broke Sachin’s iconic record from the 2003 World Cup, where Sachin had scored 673 runs. Kohli’s phenomenal 765 runs in the 2023 World Cup reset the benchmark for batting brilliance in global tournaments.

Records Kohli May Never Break

While Kohli has surpassed many of Sachin’s achievements, some records are likely to remain untouched:

● Most ODIs and International Matches

Sachin’s longevity is unmatched:

  • 463 ODIs
  • 664 international matches

Given Kohli now plays only ODIs and has opted out of multi-format cricket, surpassing these numbers appears nearly impossible.

● Most Player of the Match Awards in ODIs

Sachin received 62 Player of the Match awards in ODIs.
Kohli, despite his brilliance, stands at 44—a significant gap that may be difficult to bridge.

● World Cup Runs

Sachin’s 2,278 World Cup runs remain another monumental milestone. With Kohli unlikely to feature in multiple future World Cups, this record is expected to stay with the Master Blaster.

The One Record Kohli Might Break Soon

Across all formats combined, Sachin holds 76 Player of the Match awards.
With Kohli securing his 70th POTM in Ranchi, this is one major Sachin landmark that Kohli is well on track to surpass.
