Cape Town: The struggles of defending champions MI Cape Town continued in the SA20 league as they suffered yet another defeat, going down by seven wickets to Paarl Royals. After five matches, MI Cape Town are still searching for their first win of the season, a worrying sign for a team packed with international stars.
Despite being led by Rashid Khan and boasting big names such as Nicholas Pooran, Ryan Rickelton, Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada, MI Cape Town find themselves rooted to the bottom of the points table. From five matches, the team has managed just two points—four losses and one no-result due to rain.
MI Cape Town Collapse to 88
In the 13th match of the tournament, MI Cape Town were asked to bat first and were bundled out for a paltry 88 runs. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen added 27 runs for the first wicket, but once the partnership was broken, wickets fell in quick succession. The pitch offered assistance to the bowlers, and Paarl Royals exploited the conditions perfectly.
Nicholas Pooran struggled for fluency, scoring 17 runs off 25 balls, while Reeza Hendricks made 18 off 24 deliveries. The pair added just 24 runs in 33 balls, further increasing the pressure. MI lost their last six wickets for just eight runs, with the innings ending in the 19th over.
Sikandar Raza was the standout performer, delivering a sensational spell of 4 overs for just 13 runs and picking up four wickets. Nqaba Mokoena and Ottniel Baartman claimed two wickets each, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman conceded only 17 runs in his four overs.
Paarl Royals Cruise to Victory
Chasing a modest target, Paarl Royals sealed the win comfortably in the 13th over. Opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius was dismissed by Trent Boult in the very first over, but Aasif Tareen and Rubin Hermann steadied the chase with a 54-run partnership. Tareen scored 34, while Hermann contributed 18.
Captain David Miller finished the match in style, smashing an unbeaten 19 off just nine balls to guide his team home with seven wickets in hand.
With this victory, Paarl Royals climbed to second place on the points table with 13 points from four matches. Meanwhile, MI Cape Town’s title defence continues to unravel, with the defending champions still winless as the tournament gathers momentum.
