
Centurion: The Pretoria Capitals continued their disappointing run in the SA20 League, suffering a crushing 10-wicket loss to Sunrisers Eastern Cape in their fifth match of the season. The match, played at the SuperSport Park, Centurion, saw opener duo Quinton de Kock and Jonny Bairstow dominate with a sensational unbroken 177-run partnership, sealing the victory for Eastern Cape by the 15th over.
With this win, Eastern Cape consolidated their position at the top of the table with 17 points, while Pretoria Capitals remain fifth, having managed only one win in five matches. The Capitals are coached by former India captain Saurav Ganguly.
Capitals’ batting falters again
After winning the toss, Pretoria Capitals chose to bat first. Conor Esterhuizen provided a solid start, but the team lost key wickets in the powerplay, including Bryce Parsons (18) and Shai Hope (5). Esterhuizen held the innings together, reaching a fifty off 28 balls and finishing with 52 runs, including 6 fours and 2 sixes. Sherfane Rutherford contributed 47 runs off 22 balls, but the rest of the lineup failed to support him.
The Capitals managed 176 for 7 in their 20 overs, with Dewald Brevis scoring just 8 off 13 balls and Andre Russell adding 4. Enrich Nortje was the pick of the bowlers for Eastern Cape, taking 3 wickets for 32 runs, while Adam Milne claimed 2 wickets.
De Kock and Bairstow dominate chase
In response, Eastern Cape’s openers Jonny Bairstow and Quinton de Kock played a flawless innings, giving the Capitals no chance. The pair added 66 runs in the powerplay, with Bairstow scoring 85 off 45 balls (8 fours, 6 sixes) and de Kock contributing 79 off 41 balls (5 fours, 6 sixes). Bairstow unleashed a spectacular over against Keshav Maharaj, hitting 5 sixes and 1 four. Eastern Cape comfortably reached the target in 14.2 overs, completing a 10-wicket triumph.
With this dominant performance, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape showcased why they are the team to beat in the SA20, while the Pretoria Capitals face mounting pressure to turn their campaign around.
