Ahmedabad: South Africa’s Quinton de Kock has been on a record-breaking spree in the 2026 T20 World Cup, yet he narrowly missed a major personal milestone against Afghanistan, falling short by just two runs before being dismissed by Rashid Khan. Despite this, he etched his name in South African cricket history with another significant achievement.
Falling Just Short of a Milestone
At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, de Kock was in sensational form, needing 61 runs to reach 3,000 T20 international runs. He dominated Afghanistan’s bowlers, smashing 59 runs off 41 balls, including five boundaries and three sixes. Just when it seemed he would cross the milestone, he mistimed a pull shot off a flat delivery from Rashid Khan and was caught by Ibrahim Zadran at deep mid-wicket. De Kock will now have to wait for South Africa’s match against New Zealand on February 14 to reach this magical figure.
Breaking AB de Villiers’ T20 World Cup Record
Even though de Kock fell short of the 3,000-run mark, he achieved a remarkable feat: he is now the highest run-scorer for South Africa in T20 World Cups, surpassing AB de Villiers’ record of 717 runs. De Kock has amassed 737 runs in 29 innings at an average of 26.32 and a strike rate of 134.24.
Matching MS Dhoni’s Wicketkeeping Record
In addition, de Kock has equaled another prestigious record during this tournament. He now shares with India’s legendary captain MS Dhoni the record for most dismissals as a wicketkeeper in T20 World Cup history, having reached 32 dismissals after the match against Canada. He will have another opportunity to extend this record in the upcoming game against Afghanistan.
