Melbourne, Jan 31: Australia suffered a major setback on Saturday as its star fast bowler Pat Cummins was ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup due to injury. The national selectors have named Ben Dwarshuis as his replacement in the 15-member squad.
The 32-year-old Cummins has not fully recovered from a persistent back injury and will therefore miss the tournament scheduled to begin on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. His absence leaves a significant void in Australia’s pace attack, which had been expected to play a key role in defending the team’s title.
In addition to Cummins, top-order batsman Matthew Short has also been excluded from the initial 15-member squad. The selection committee cited fitness concerns and team balance as reasons behind the changes.
Dwarshuis, a left-arm fast bowler known for his death-over expertise, now faces the challenge of stepping up in the absence of Cummins. Cricket analysts note that Australia’s bowling strategy will need to be recalibrated, especially given the spin-friendly conditions expected in India and Sri Lanka.
Selectors have expressed confidence that the squad, despite the setbacks, remains strong and well-balanced. “While Cummins’ injury is a blow, we have full faith in the players named in the squad to perform at the highest level,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said.
The T20 World Cup, featuring 16 teams, will see Australia aiming to defend its title amid stiff competition from powerhouses like India, England, and Pakistan. Fans will be watching closely to see how the team adapts in the absence of its marquee pacer.
