Canberra: In a shocking incident highlighting administrative lapses, the Pakistan national hockey team was left stranded on the streets of Canberra, Australia, after hotel payments were not made, forcing players and officials to wait for hours without accommodation. The team had traveled to participate in the FIH Pro League second phase matches.
What Happened
According to sources, a lack of coordination between the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), coupled with insufficient funds, put the players in this humiliating situation. Rooms had been booked at a four-star hotel, and the team was assured that all payments had been handled. However, upon arrival, there were no reservations in their names, leaving the players and officials without a place to rest after a long journey from Lahore.
Temporary Relief
Due to time differences, head coach Tahir Zaman was unable to immediately contact officials. With the help of some local Pakistani expatriates, the situation was partially resolved. The hotel provided a few rooms, with two to three players sharing each room, leaving the team inadequately rested. The lack of proper accommodation reportedly affected Pakistan’s performance, resulting in a narrow 2–3 loss to Australia.
Recurrent Issues
This is not the first time the Pakistan hockey team has faced logistical problems. Earlier, players were reportedly denied their daily allowances during a tour in Argentina. Adding to the challenges, the team is currently without a manager after former Olympian Anjum Saeed was dismissed for violating airline rules, including smoking on a flight and misconduct with security staff.
The incident has sparked embarrassment for Pakistan on the global stage, raising serious concerns about the administration and funding of the national hockey team.
