On this day in cricket history, 10 December 2022, Indian cricket witnessed a remarkable feat as Ishan Kishan stepped in to replace the injured Rohit Sharma in the final ODI against Bangladesh and produced a record-breaking performance.
Rohit Sharma Sidelined
Rohit Sharma, famously known as the “Hitman” and one of only three players in ODI history to score three double centuries, was ruled unfit due to injury ahead of the Chattogram match. His absence placed enormous pressure on the Indian team and the player stepping in to fill his shoes.
With India already having lost the first two ODIs of the series, expectations were high but the challenge was immense for the replacement opener. Captain KL Rahul promoted Ishan Kishan to open the innings in Rohit’s place.
Ishan Kishan Writes History
Kishan did not disappoint. He smashed a double century in just 126 balls, shattering the previous record for the fastest double century held by Chris Gayle, who had achieved the milestone in 138 balls against Zimbabwe in 2015.
At 24 years old, Kishan also became the youngest player to score a double century in ODI cricket. He was the first batsman to score over 200 runs in his debut century, a feat that left cricket fans and analysts stunned.
Match Triumph
Ishan Kishan’s innings was a masterclass: 210 runs off 131 balls, including 24 fours and 10 sixes, powering India to a colossal 409-run total. Bangladesh, in reply, were bowled out for just 182, handing India a massive 227-run victory. This win salvaged India’s pride and prevented a series whitewash, ultimately concluding the three-match series 2-1 in India’s favor.
Kishan’s International Career Post-2023
Ishan Kishan has played 2 Tests (78 runs), 27 ODIs (933 runs), and 32 T20Is (796 runs) for India. As a wicketkeeper, he has effected 5 catches in Tests, 13 catches and 2 stumpings in ODIs, and 13 catches and 3 stumpings in T20Is. The 27-year-old last represented India in a T20 match against Australia on 28 November 2023, with his final ODI appearance on 11 October 2023 in Delhi.
This historic innings not only cemented Ishan Kishan’s place in cricketing history but also proved that stepping into the shoes of a legend like Rohit Sharma could inspire unforgettable heroics on the field.
