This victory ended a long 70-year wait, with the first-ever tour of Australia by an Indian team dating back to 1947-48. The day India made history, Australia, known for its formidable cricket team both at home and abroad, was finally overcome in a Test series.
India Clinches Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2018-19
The 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy reached its thrilling conclusion on January 7, with the Sydney Test being drawn. India won the four-match series 2-1, securing a historic series victory on Australian soil. The final match took place at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
India made a remarkable start by posting a colossal 622 runs for 7 in their first innings. Cheteshwar Pujara scored an invaluable 193 runs, while Rishabh Pant contributed 159 runs, and Ravindra Jadeja added 81 runs. In response, Australia was bowled out for just 300 runs in their first innings, thanks to some impressive bowling from Kuldeep Yadav.
The second innings was disrupted by rain, with Australia managing only 6 runs before the downpour halted play. As a result, the fifth day of the match saw no further play, but India had already sealed the series victory with a 2-1 lead.
The First Three Matches of the Series
The series opener took place in Adelaide, where India triumphed by 31 runs. After posting 250 runs in their first innings, India restricted Australia to just 235 runs. In their second innings, India scored 307 runs, while Australia was again bowled out for 291 runs, with Cheteshwar Pujara named Player of the Match for his brilliant performance.
Australia bounced back in the Perth Test, winning the match despite a century from Virat Kohli. Nathan Lyon emerged as the hero with the ball for Australia. However, India responded strongly in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, where Pujara scored another century, and contributions from Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma helped India reach a strong total. With Jasprit Bumrah taking 9 wickets, India won the match by 137 runs.
Player of the Series: Cheteshwar Pujara
Cheteshwar Pujara was named the Player of the Series after scoring a total of 521 runs in the four matches. No other batsman in the series crossed 350 runs. On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker with 21 wickets to his name.
