Colombo: New Zealand’s middle-order batter Mark Chapman has acknowledged the challenge posed by Pakistan’s mystery spinner Usman Tariq ahead of their crucial Super 8 encounter in the T20 World Cup. The high-stakes Group 2 match will see New Zealand take on Pakistan in Colombo on Saturday.
Chapman Highlights Tariq’s Unique Action
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Chapman said that Tariq’s unconventional bowling action — particularly his ability to pause at the crease before delivery — makes him a difficult bowler to read.
“Usman Tariq has a very different kind of action. The way he holds at the crease before releasing the ball is quite unusual, and that’s something we’ll need to be mindful of,” Chapman said.
He also emphasized that Pakistan’s spin department as a whole presents multiple challenges, with each spinner offering a different skill set and tactical variation.
Bilateral Experience to Help New Zealand
Since August 2024, New Zealand and Pakistan have faced each other 20 times across ODIs and T20Is. Chapman believes that these frequent encounters have helped New Zealand understand Pakistan’s bowling patterns better.
“Over the past couple of years, Pakistan is one of the teams we’ve played the most against. We have a fair idea of the kind of challenges they will bring. What’s important for us is to stay clear on our plans as a team,” he added.
Spin Likely to Dominate in Sri Lanka
Chapman admitted that conditions in Sri Lanka are slower compared to India, which could make spin a decisive factor in the Super 8 stage.
“There’s a good chance spin will play a bigger role here. We’ll assess the pitch and make our final judgment, but adaptability will be key,” he noted.
The 31-year-old batter also expressed optimism about playing all three Super 8 matches at the same venue in Colombo, saying that consistency in conditions could work in New Zealand’s favor.
“In tournaments like this, constantly moving between venues and adjusting to different conditions can be tough. Playing all three matches at one ground gives us a chance to learn and improve with each game. It’s definitely a positive for us.”
With both teams eyeing a semifinal berth, the clash promises to be an intense battle — especially between New Zealand’s middle order and Pakistan’s spin attack led by Usman Tariq.
