“No Ultimatum Was Issued”: Bangladesh Responds to ICC’s Refusal to Shift T20 World Cup 2026 Matches

Dhaka: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rejected Bangladesh’s request to shift its T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India. Following the decision, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued its first official response, dismissing reports of any ultimatum from the ICC and reiterating that player safety remains its highest priority.

Here are the five key takeaways from Bangladesh’s reaction:

1. ICC Assures Bangladesh’s Participation in T20 World Cup 2026

The BCB confirmed that it has received an official response from the ICC regarding its concerns. According to the board, the ICC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring Bangladesh’s full participation in the T20 World Cup 2026. The ICC has also assured that it will work to remove any obstacles that could hinder Bangladesh’s involvement in the tournament.

2. Team Security Remains Bangladesh’s Top Priority

While the BCB has not indicated any intention to withdraw from the tournament, it has clearly stated that the safety, security, and well-being of Bangladeshi players and officials remain paramount.
“Our highest priority is the security and welfare of Bangladesh cricket,” the BCB said, underlining that it remains fully committed to protecting its players.

3. BCB Denies Reports of ICC Ultimatum

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has categorically rejected media reports claiming that the ICC issued an ultimatum regarding Bangladesh’s participation in the World Cup.
“We clearly refute such claims as false and baseless. No such ultimatum has been communicated to us by the ICC,” the BCB stated.

4. Continued Dialogue with ICC and Organisers

The BCB said it remains in continuous and professional communication with the ICC and tournament organisers, including the BCCI, to find a practical and amicable solution. The board emphasized that discussions are ongoing to ensure Bangladesh’s smooth participation in the global event.

5. Controversy Triggered by Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL Exit

The dispute escalated after Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released from the IPL 2026 by Kolkata Knight Riders, who had bought him for ₹9.2 crore. The decision reportedly followed rising public sentiment in India amid concerns linked to unrest in Bangladesh.
Following Rahman’s release, the BCB raised concerns over the safety of its players in India and requested the ICC to shift Bangladesh’s World Cup matches to Sri Lanka—a request the ICC has now declined.
