Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman has recently been released after being bought in the IPL auction. However, he has decided not to take any legal action against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
New Delhi: Relations between India and Bangladesh have recently come under strain. In the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction, Kolkata Knight Riders purchased Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore. Following violent incidents against Hindus in Bangladesh, fans began criticizing the franchise heavily. Subsequently, the BCCI directed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman, which the franchise complied with.
Mohammad Mithun, President of the Bangladesh Cricketers Welfare Association (BCWA), revealed that a potential legal or administrative battle against the IPL franchise had been considered. However, Mustafizur himself refused to pursue any legal action.
The 30-year-old Mustafizur made his IPL debut in 2016. Since then, he has played 60 matches in the league, taking 65 wickets at an economy rate of 8.13.
Following his release, Bangladesh has made a major decision regarding the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Citing safety concerns, Mustafizur has refused to travel to India for the tournament, and Bangladesh is reportedly seeking to play its matches outside India. The ICC, however, has urged the Bangladesh Cricket Board to reconsider its stance.
Bangladesh is placed in Group C of the T20 World Cup, alongside England, West Indies, Nepal, and Italy. The team is scheduled to play three matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. Whether Bangladesh will participate in the tournament in India remains to be seen.
