Former India captain MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, continues to be an active figure in the IPL. The five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained their core and invested in young talent during the IPL 2026 auction held on 16 December, spending ₹40 crore to acquire nine players, including Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma for ₹14.20 crore each.
Dhoni, however, has confirmed he will once again take the field in IPL 2026. Speculation about his future, however, has been fueled by his former teammate Robin Uthappa, who suggested that this season could mark the end of Dhoni’s illustrious IPL career.
Uthappa’s Insights on Dhoni’s Role
Speaking on JioHotstar, Uthappa said, “I think everything is clear now. This is likely MS Dhoni’s last season. There’s no guessing anymore. The team’s focus on investing in young talent and the choices made over the last year clearly indicate this direction.”
He added, “They are concentrating on nurturing young talent and retaining them in the franchise. If mentorship from Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy can shape another player like Jadeja, why not?”
Uthappa further noted that Dhoni is expected to take on a mentor-cum-player role this year, guiding the team both on and off the field.
Dhoni’s IPL Legacy
MS Dhoni has featured in 278 IPL matches, scoring 5,439 runs at an average of 137.4, cementing his legacy as one of the league’s greatest players. His presence as a player and mentor continues to inspire both young cricketers and fans alike.
