New Delhi: South Africa’s preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 have suffered a serious blow, with two key batters ruled out of the tournament and uncertainty looming over the fitness of veteran finisher David Miller. The injuries come at a crucial time, just days before the World Cup and ahead of the upcoming T20 series against West Indies.
Tony de Zorzi Ruled Out of World Cup
Left-handed batter Tony de Zorzi has been officially ruled out of both the West Indies T20 series and the T20 World Cup 2026. De Zorzi sustained a right hamstring injury during the ODI series against India last month. His recovery has taken longer than expected, prompting the team management to avoid rushing him back into action.
Donovan Ferreira Also Misses Out
South Africa suffered another setback as aggressive middle-order batter Donovan Ferreira fractured his left collarbone during an SA20 League match on January 17. Due to the severity of the injury, Ferreira will be unavailable for the World Cup, depriving the Proteas of a powerful batting option in the middle overs.
Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs Added to Squad
In response to the injury crisis, South Africa have included Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs in their 15-member World Cup squad. Rickelton is expected to strengthen the top order, while Stubbs’ explosive batting provides added depth and firepower to the lineup.
David Miller’s Fitness Under Cloud
Senior batter David Miller has also picked up an adductor muscle injury and will miss the T20I series against West Indies. His participation in the T20 World Cup will depend on the outcome of a fitness test closer to the tournament. Rubin Hermann has been named as cover in the T20 squad.
South Africa’s World Cup Campaign
South Africa will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on February 9 against Canada in Ahmedabad. Placed in Group D alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan, UAE, and Canada, the Proteas will be aiming to go one step further after finishing runners-up in the 2024 edition, where they lost the final to India. Following their World Test Championship triumph last year, South Africa will be eager to add another ICC title to their cabinet.
