New Delhi: Team India has suffered a serious setback early in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, as explosive opener Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a severe stomach infection. The young batter is reportedly under medical supervision and is highly unlikely to feature in India’s upcoming match against Namibia on February 12.
The development has raised concerns within the Indian camp, especially with a high-voltage clash against Pakistan scheduled for February 15.
High Fever Worsened Condition After USA Match
According to a report by The Times of India, Abhishek Sharma had started feeling unwell even before India’s match against the USA. However, after playing the game, his health deteriorated further, and he was taken to the hospital following a high fever.
A source close to the BCCI confirmed that Abhishek is currently being monitored by doctors and has undergone multiple medical tests.
His condition was evident during the USA match itself, as he was dismissed for a golden duck and did not take the field for the rest of the match. Sanju Samson substituted for him and completed the fielding duties.
Notably, Abhishek was also unable to come out for the traditional post-match handshakes after India’s victory, highlighting the seriousness of his illness.
Relief for India: Other Players Fit, Bumrah Back in Action
While Abhishek’s hospitalisation has created panic, the Indian team has received some positive updates regarding other players.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate informed the media that all-rounder Washington Sundar has joined the squad and has already resumed practice. If Abhishek fails to recover in time, Sundar or Sanju Samson could be considered for a place in the playing XI.
In another major boost, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has resumed bowling after a 10-day break and is reportedly looking fully fit.
Ten Doeschate also praised skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who played a crucial knock of 84 runs in the previous match to steer India out of trouble.
Team Management Still Hopeful About Abhishek’s Recovery
Despite the current situation, the coaching staff has not completely ruled out Abhishek’s quick recovery.
“Abhishek is having some stomach-related issues, but we are hopeful he will recover within two days,” said ten Doeschate.
However, given the severity of his condition and the upcoming crucial match against Pakistan, India’s team management is unlikely to take any risk with the opener’s fitness.
India Faces Selection Dilemma Ahead of Key Matches
With Abhishek Sharma hospitalised, India may be forced to rethink its opening combination against Namibia. The final decision will depend on the medical reports in the next 48 hours.
India’s campaign is at a critical stage, and Abhishek’s absence could prove to be a major blow, especially with the tournament’s most anticipated clash against Pakistan approaching.
