Mumbai: Maharashtra was left in shock on Wednesday morning following the untimely death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash. Among those expressing grief was cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who described Ajit Pawar as a hardworking and dedicated leader.
Tendulkar’s Tribute
Sharing his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), Tendulkar wrote:
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Ajit Pawar. We have suddenly lost a good leader, someone who worked tirelessly for Maharashtra. My condolences to the Pawar family. May God grant peace to his soul.”
Details of the Tragic Accident
Ajit Pawar’s private aircraft crashed while attempting to land in Baramati, his hometown and the Pawar family’s political stronghold. All five people on board, including the flight crew, lost their lives. Pawar was en route to attend a local event. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Ajit Pawar’s Connection with Sports
Although primarily known for his political career, Ajit Pawar maintained close ties with sports. He served multiple terms as president of the Maharashtra Olympic Association, and his family has been deeply involved in cricket. While currently at odds with his uncle Sharad Pawar, who played a significant role in Ajit’s political career, Ajit’s ties to cricket administration were notable. Sharad Pawar previously served as head of the ICC, BCCI, and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Ajit’s nephew, Rohit Pawar, currently serves as president of the Maharashtra Cricket Association.
Ajit Pawar’s sudden demise is being mourned across Maharashtra, highlighting the void left by a leader committed to both public service and the promotion of sports in the state.
